Founded in 1801, Trujillo Alto is the second fastest-growing city in the San Juan Metropolitan area. In 1925 Don Angel Rivero Méndez and his wife founded La Gruta de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. This replica of the Lourdes Shrine in France is a place of pilgrimage during Holy Week. As the last Spanish officer of high rank on the Island, Don Angel Rivero formally surrendered Puerto Rico to the United States after the Spanish-American War. ... (more)

Construction on the plaza began in 1910 and was completed in 1913. Today with its park benches, walkways, and colorful murals, the plaza is the central meeting place of the town. The plaza is also the location of many festivals including the Patron Saints and the Festival del Macabeo.

Since 1985, marathoners Puerto Rico have come to Trujillo Alto to participate in this 5-mile event. Internationally recognized Puerto Rican athletes Peco González and Alfredito Castro have participated.
